In 2018, the government passed a law which legalised some forms of cannabis-based products for medical reasons. Specialist doctors can now prescribe these products as an official medical treatment. There are various product types, some better than others at treating specific ailments. Green Soul offers multiple Cannabis oil types, and we’ll be exploring the effectiveness of CBD oil for seizures in this article. We’ll answer the question of “Does CBD help with seizures?” and what types of CBD epilepsy are there?
What are cannabis and cannabidiol?
Cannabis is a plant that, when consumed, provides a variety of psychoactive effects. There are hundreds of components in the makeup of cannabis. The two most well-known ones are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), found in the plant’s resin. THC activates the psychoactive effects people generally associate with cannabis. On the other hand, Cannabidiol isn’t generally psychoactive. Instead, it provides various health benefits. These include the beneficial medical relationship between epilepsy and CBD.
Exploring Medical Cannabis
Cannabis oil for seizures is one of the many medical uses for this product. Seizures and CBD have had a beneficial relationship that spans decades, even if authorities only officially recognised its use in recent years. CBD seizure medication has a lot of research completed to ensure it’s beneficial to the CBD seizures effects and no long-term side effects occur.
Electrical activity in your brain causes seizures. CBD oil contains a chemical component that might help treat these seizures the same as it does chronic pain and anxiety. The question of “Can CBD help with seizures?” has been answered with an overwhelming yes. However, research hasn’t properly defined the relationship between CBD and seizures. As such, it’s not certain how CBD oil for seizures in adults helps.
Types of CBD
There are various types of Cannabis oils available, from CBD oil, 30% products, down to 5% or less. While there’s no specific commercial CBD for seizures in humans, most CBD Oil 5% products, with 500 mg Cannabis, are known to help treat seizures. Green Soul products are quality oils with no THC oil mixed in.
However, the only approved product medical practitioners can prescribe you is Epidyolex and variations of this product. Authorities see it as the official cannabis oil for epilepsy, but it doesn’t cure or prevent the development of seizures.
The effect of cannabis on epilepsy
The human body has thousands of neurotransmitters and receptors that regulate bodily functions. This system of neurotransmitters is called the Endocannabinoid System. It controls your immune system response, pain, sleep and appetite. Cannabis oil for seizures supposedly interacts with these receptors and modifies the reactions.
Research on animals shows that epilepsy CBD oil reduces neuron activity and excitability in GPR55 and TRPV1 receptors. However, there are various types of CBD oil for epilepsy on the market.
Prescribing CBD products
Specialists can prescribe CBD oil for epilepsy if another medication isn’t working. Generally, the dose prescribed is lower, at around 10 to 20 mg/kg. Below, we look at what results from these studies have shown in different types of epilepsy.
NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) gives guidelines on which patients should take these medications. Only people who found two or more other types of medication not working for them should take these medications. For all patients, NICE recommends monitoring the frequency of your seizures for six months. You should stop taking it if you see no improvement.
Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome
Lennox-Gastaut is the cause of between two and five per cent of epilepsy in childhood cases. Studies have shown that patients using Epidyolex suffer up to 44% fewer seizures than ones who don’t use it. It better controls the drop seizures this type is known for and helps patients better prevent the symptoms.
Dravet Syndrome
People with Dravet syndrome often don’t respond well to medication. As it’s a rarer type of epilepsy, convulsion seizures often aren’t treated properly with medication. However, some studies showed that participants who use CBD seizure medication experience a drop in their seizure frequency. Researchers record up to 39% fewer seizures than average.
Tuberous Sclerosis Complex
This type of epilepsy is rare and appears in one in 6,000 people. It’s defined by the non-cancerous tumours that grow in your body and is a genetic condition. Brain tumours lead to seizures, which makes them dangerous for patients.
Studies on this group compared the effect of 25 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg Cannabis oils (or Epidyolex) and a placebo. Compared to the placebo, which showed a 24% median improvement in the group, the Epidyolex showed a 48% median improvement in the patients.
Guidance from the BPNA and ABN
The British Paediatric Neurology Association (BPNA) states it’s vital to consult your epilepsy doctor if you want to know what type of CBD for epilepsy you may need. You should only consider non-licensed CBD oils for seizures for patients who don’t respond to conventional methods or aren’t liable for epilepsy surgery. For children already on THC oil for seizures, BPNA recommends switching to a CBD alternative until researchers properly research the side effects of THC.
The Association of British Neurologists (ABN) states that evidence only supports the effectiveness of these oils in Dravet and Lennox-Gastaut patients, and any other usage isn’t yet clearly defined. Randomised trials with children and young adults took place, and the research was overwhelmingly in favour of Cannabis products compared to placebos.
